Day 31 / 31 km 💯🏅👫🌳

Sunday 31st May
Hey friends! We did it! Today marks the end of the May walking challenge for the @heartandstroke foundation. Our team's final numbers are starting to roll in. So far we have raised $1325. I actually managed to get in 80 kilometers over the month as well. I'm so proud of all the personal wins we've achieved this month; for me it was getting that daily walk in, rain or shine, and getting to know the neighborhood more. Thank you so much to everyone who has donated, liked my posts, and shared words of encouragement along the way. My family committed to @HeartandStroke Foundation's May challenge in memory of my mom's Dad. If you're able to, it's not too late to make a donation. We'd be grateful for your support!

Day 30 / 31 km 🌇🌳👟👫

Sunday 31st May
A quick loop this evening around Brown's Inlet with Steffi. We saw what we think was a bachelorette party in the park and a few rabbits on our path. It is a neat area to walk around with all these older homes in the Glebe. Many of them have lovely porches and gardens. We enjoyed dreaming of having our own one day!

Day 29 / 31 km ☁️👟🌳💐

Friday 29th May
Today I was listening to some music and thought I'd go a past the usual bench spot that marks my 1km. I ended up circling Rockliffe Park and taking a peek at the Riverhouse along the way. Lots of neat plants, flowers, and trees to admire along the way.

Day 28 / 31 km ⛅👟🌳🐦

Thursday 28th May
Back to "the spot" this morning. It is a bit cooler with the clouds and wind but so very peaceful here at the moment. I have really appreciated being able to come to this spot and watch the happenings around the pond; a few blue herons, ducks, birds, chipmunks, squirrels, rabbits, and people walking their dogs.

Day 27 / 31 km 🚶‍♂️‍➡️👟☀️☕

Thursday 28th May
A bit of a longer walk today to do an errand but it rounded out nicely with a lovely snack and iced tea. It was nice to see the different shops along Beechwood embracing the warmer weather and getting some use of their patios. This challenge has definitely shown how much change can happen in one month as our Spring felt more like a Sprint!

Day 26 / 31 🚶‍♂️‍➡️⛅🌳🪻

Tuesday 26th May
We are on the final countdown until the challenge is complete! Took the usual route today for consistency. It's interesting what you notice differently each day like these blooming trees and white daffodils. My family has committed to @HeartandStroke Foundation's May challenge in memory of my mom's Dad. If you're able to, we'd be grateful for your support.

Day 25 / 31 km ☁️ 🚙🙏👟

Tuesday 26th May
A quick 1 km this morning as we dropped off the car to have an oil leak checked out. Definitely recognizing a little stress rising as car maintenance is not my expertise. At least the mechanic is a short walk from our house; a chance to slow down, breath, and take in the sights of the neighborhood waking up. I even spotted this little fella on the journey home.

Day 24 / 31 km ☁️👫🌳🐦

Sunday 24th May
#24 was another evening walk with Steffi. It had been a rainy morning and we had a light misting while we were out, but the petrichor brought on some fond memories. I remember visits at my grandparents' place in Point Roberts and looking for slugs around Grandpa's garden with my sister. Cozy and heartwarming.

Day 23 / 31 km ☁️🌳🦟👫

Sunday 24th May
Lovely evening stroll with Steffi today. We did the usual walk to the bench and back, though the mosquitos are out in force again!

Day 22 / 31 km ☀️🌲🌳🦟

Saturday 23rd May
Today I did a short loop around the park at our local library. Loved the cool air and variety of trees in this little micro forest that also hosts a local sugar shack. Not a fan of the swarm of mosquitoes that came to accompany me during the walk. I would have liked to go for a longer walk, but the company sucked.

Day 21 / 31 km ☀️🌬️👟☕

Thursday 21st May
A beauty of a day, even if it is somewhat chilly. Had a couple errands this morning so I took a different route and found another nice spot looking over the Rideau river. Just missed snapping a picture of a woodpecker, but loved watching the ducks, geese, and birds from this view.

Day 20 / 31 km ☀️👟🌬️💨

Wednesday 20th May
Entering the final stretch today! It's been fun to watch how much this view has changed over the past few weeks. At the start of the month there was barely a single bud on these trees!

Day 19 / 31 km ☀️🌡️🥵☀️

Tuesday 19th May
Today I felt like Mario in the desert level getting chased by an angry sun! 30+humidity made me a sweaty boy. I think I enjoy my walks best in the morning when it is a little cooler. Whatever the weather, I'm glad I got out and got the kilometer done.

Day 18 / 31 km 👟🌞☕🏘️

Monday 18th May
A quick one this morning to grab a coffee and scone. Walked around through the neighbourhood and said a few "good mornings" to strangers along the way. Now it's time to enjoy the nice weather, enjoy some coffee, and read in the back yard.

Day 17 / 31 km 🎉🐦‍⬛☀️👟

Sunday 17th May
Today Steffi and I went over to Dow's Lake and took in the sights of the 74th Annual Tulip Festival. The festival is one of the largest in the world, with over 1,000,000 tulips planted throughout the National Capital Region. It commemorates the close relationship between the Netherlands and Canada established during the second world war. It also makes today a bit of a full circle moment for me as I walk amongst these beautiful flowers thinking about my Grandpa, who was one of the many Canadians who helped to liberate Holland.

Day 16 / 31 km 👟🌦️🐿️👫

Saturday 16th May
A beauty of a morning gave way to some intermittent rain this afternoon, but that didn't stop me from rocking some shorts for today's kilometer. I've been loving these walls to the bench and taking some time to reflect.

Day 15 / 31 km 👟 🌳🌤️🐦‍⬛

Friday 15th May
Day 15 / 31 km 👟 🌳🌤️🐦‍⬛

Day 15 of walking 1 km a day in May complete! I enjoyed a nice medidative pause to enjoy the birdsong and warmer weather. The birds sang their hearts out over some percussive construction sounds 👷‍♂️🔨!

Day 14 / 31 km 👟☁️💐☕

Thursday 14th May
Hello day fourteen! A bit of a break from the rain today, some tunes on the headphones, and the promise of a coffee and scone helped motivate me through today's kilometer. We are just about halfway through @HeartAndStroke foundation's May challenge to walk 1km a day. My family has committed to the challenge in memory of my mom's Dad. If you're able to, we'd be grateful for your support.

Day 13 / 31 km ☔🌧️👟🍲

Wednesday 13th May
Today's pallendromic kilometer was a cold and rainy one. Here's a few rainy clips for the rainy day people out there 😊

Day 12 / 31 km 🏘️👟🌞🌳

Wednesday 13th May
Found my kilometer today with a walk through the neighbourhood this afternoon, and was treated by a nice variety of trees along the way.

Day 11 / 31 km 👟🌦️🚣‍♂️📽️

Monday 11th May
I thought today I would head over to the Ottawa River Pathway this morning and stroll over to the River House. I had hoped that I could read a chapter or two while there but nature had other plans. This pathway is a short drive from our house, but definitely worth it. It reminds me of taking a stroll along the river dike with the family dog back in Kamloops.

Day 10 / 31 km 👫👟🍃🐇

Sunday 10th May
Another windy kilometer on the board! A quick walk to the usual spot today with Steffi. Chipmunks, squirrels, a rabbit, and the usual chorus of birds were spotted. We also oggled the dogs that walked by the bench today. Hopefully you were able to enjoy and recharge this weekend ♥️

Day 9 / 31 km 🥾👫🏞️🌞

Saturday 9th May
Another kilometer for @HeartAndStroke complete! Today Steffi and I went up to Pink Lake in Gatineau Park and hiked along the trail loop there. I found the stairs a little challenging - about a third of this loop is climbing and descending around the lake! Luckily my hiking partner didn't mind me slowing her down 😅. It was really neat to see the Mica mine and a beautiful red headed woodpecker, though it was too fast for me to get a picture. I've been walking 1 km a day in memory of my Grandpa and support of the Heart and Stroke foundation. I'm feeling very grateful for the support and kind words people have been sending my way this past week. If you are able to make a donation you can check out this link: https://give.heartandstroke.ca/fundraisers/markramsay/walk-1k-may

Day 8 / 31 km 🐦‍⬛☀️🤧🌳

Friday 8th May
Happy Friday everyone 🥳 I hope your weather is as nice as it is here! We are now on day 8 of the @HeartAndStroke walking challenge and my motivation is as high as the pollen levels. Luckily I have a lovely orchestra of bird song to listen to.

Day 7 / 31 km 🎉🐦‍⬛☀️👟

Friday 8th May
Locking in our 7th day for @heartandstroke foundation's May walking challenge! I thought I'd share a few clips of the usual route today as I went out to the pond and back. Day 7 feels like an achievement as it's the first "week" of the challenge complete. So far our team has been able to raise $1125! I am so thankful for the kind words of support and the donations you have given ♥️

Day 6 / 31 km 👍 👟🌥️☕

Wednesday 6th May
Gray skies but no rain as I changed up my route today to finish with a coffee in hand. It's still a little cool in the mornings here but the trees are full of buds and the pollen is out in force! 🤧

Day 5 / 31 km ☂️🌧️👟📷

Tuesday 5th May
Today I did a little treasure hunt / I spy game to snap a few letters along my walk. FAST is the acronym to know to help those who may be experiencing a stroke: F - is their Face drooping? A - can they raise both Arms? S - is their Speech slurred or jumbled? T - if yes it's Time to all 9-1-1! Thanks to everyone for their donations and support as my family continues the @heartandstroke May walking challenge. If you're able to make a donation it is greatly appreciated.

Day 4 / 31 km 🐦‍⬛💐👟🏅

Monday 4th May
Day 4 / 31 km of @heartandstroke foundation's May challenge done! Today I went for a longer (4.13km) walk through the neighborhood and grocery store. Spring is finally hitting Ottawa, so it was nice to capture a few pics. Hopefully you can get out and enjoy some lovely weather too. A heartfelt thanks to everyone for their donations. You have helped me be the first in my team to reach my fundraising goal! These donations support the ongoing research and education of heart and brain health in Canada.

Day 3 / 31 km 👫♥️👟☀️

Monday 4th May
A nice Sunday walk with Steffi. On y va mes amis!

Day 2 / 31 km 🌳🦢🚶‍♂️‍➡️👍

Saturday 2nd May
Another one kilometer done! I've committed to @heartandstroke foundation's 1 km a day in May challenge to help raise some funds in memory of my Grandpa Warren who had a life altering stroke. Help cheer my family and I on as we all work on getting outside a little more this May. If you're able to I invite you to click on the link in my bio and donate to help the foundation continue its mission of research and education.

Day 1 / 31 km 🚶‍♂️‍➡️💭♥️👟

Friday 1st May
Hi friends,

Today I started my "1km a day in May" challenge with the Heart and Stroke Foundation and completed the first kilometre of that journey this morning. I had a short walk around Brown's Inlet off of the Rideau Canal here in Ottawa. Lovely weather, singing birds, and a duck or two cheered me on.

My family encountered the enormous and life altering impact a stroke can have when my grandpa Warren "Buzz" Keating experienced one in 2005. Although family members recognized the signs and rushed him to the hospital, grandpa was not able to regain the use of half his body and his ability to communicate with us was significantly impaired. While he is no longer with us today, he left a lasting legacy in the way we care for our family and friends.

This year my sister has organised "Buzz's battalion," which is a group of family and friends that have committed to the 1 km a day challenge this May. I invite you to cheer us on and, if you can, make a donation towards the foundation to aid in their support of heart and brain health research. I've added a link to our group's donation page below.

Wishing you all a lovely start to May,
Mark
