First Walk
Saturday 9th May
This morning I did my first 7.34 km walk in just over 1.5 hours. Slow, intentional, and meditative. I brought my headphones to listen to music, but when I started walking and started to mess with my phone , my dad's Apple Watch buzzed with the mindfulness quote about taking the time to be mindful (I wear the watch, but I haven't been able to change the settings). So, even though my headphones were on, I walked in silence - in my own thoughts.
I quickly realized that I jumped back into working like mad to distract myself. In the silence, I was forced to feel and was overcome with grief. I couldn't hold back the tears. But then , it was peace. I had no plan of where I was going to walk - I just walked.
I came up to the train tracks and saw a new sign on the ground. Look, listen and live. This is very much how my dad lived his life. Incredibly observant and aware of everything around him. I feel it was also a reminder to live. The train tracks reminded me that life is a journey... and we're all just passing through on the way to our destination.
I took a small detour to look over the bridge at Bowmanville Creek - where Dad used to love to fish back in the day. Just before getting to the overpass, images of salmon were stamped on the pavement. The creek was rushing and was busy with people fishing. Once upon a time, that was my Dad.
I love the omnipresence. I feel him everywhere. What a blessing.
