Every Step is a Gift

In January 2013, my life changed forever.

While working out at a gym in Orléans, I suffered a sudden cardiac arrest. My heart stopped. Thanks to the quick actions of first responders, the incredible care I received at Montfort Hospital and the Ottawa Heart Institute, and the unwavering support of my family, I was given a second chance at life. After months in hospital and rehabilitation, I was fortunate enough to return to my family, my community and the work I love.

That experience changed my perspective. It reminded me that tomorrow is never guaranteed and that every day, every milestone and every step is something to be grateful for.

This September, I’ll be putting that gratitude into action by walking 90 kilometres in support of the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation funds life-saving research, education and advocacy that gives families hope and helps more Canadians survive heart disease and stroke. Their work has touched countless lives, including mine.

As I walk those 90 kilometres, I’ll be thinking about the people who were there for me on the day my heart stopped: the first responders, doctors, nurses, rehabilitation staff, my family and friends, and everyone who offered encouragement during my recovery. I truly would not be here without them.

If my story inspires even one person to learn CPR, support heart research, or make their own heart health a priority, then every kilometre will be worthwhile.
