Why I’m Saying Yes to 1K a Day in May

Friday 1st May

There’s something about May that feels like a fresh start.

The days get longer, the air feels lighter, and everything seems to be quietly inviting you to begin again. This year, I’m answering that invitation by taking on the 1K a Day in May challenge, and it’s a little more meaningful than just getting my steps in. It’s personal.

A Full-Circle Moment

Many, many years ago, back in elementary school, I remember the excitement of Jump Rope for Heart.

The pledge sheets. The skipping challenges. The sense that even as kids, we were part of something bigger than ourselves.

I didn’t fully understand the impact back then. I just knew it felt good to participate, to move, and to contribute. And to eventually win the first and only bike I’d ever owned.

Now, years later, I find myself coming back to that same cause, but from a very different place in life.

Choosing Movement That Meets Me Where I Am

Let’s be honest: my knees and jump rope are no longer on speaking terms. And that’s okay.

What I’ve learned over time is that movement doesn’t have to be intense to be meaningful. It just has to be consistent, intentional, and aligned with where you are right now.

So instead of jumping, I’m walking.

One kilometer a day. Every day in May.

Simple and doable.

Why This Matters to Me

This challenge isn’t just about fitness. It’s about:

  • Creating space in my day to move and breathe
  • Reconnecting with a cause that’s been part of my story for years
  • Honouring the idea that small, consistent actions can lead to meaningful impact

Heart health affects so many of us, directly or indirectly. And while I may not be skipping rope anymore, I can still show up. Step by step.

More Than Just Steps

I know there will be days when it’s easy and days when it’s not. Days when I’m energized, and days when I’ll have to push myself just to get out the door. But that’s kind of the point. Because this isn’t just about walking 1K. It’s about showing up for something that matters, even in small ways.

An Invitation

If you’ve been thinking about doing something for yourself, like moving more, giving back, or just starting something, this is your sign.

It doesn’t have to be perfect. It doesn’t have to be intense. It just has to start.
