A new appreciation for EVERY heartbeat

Tuesday 12th May
Today marks three weeks since the events of April 20 that changed my life in an instant.

Physically, I am healing very well. My new pacemaker is doing exactly what it was designed to do, and each day I feel stronger and more confident.

On May 6, as I celebrated my birthday just two weeks after receiving my pacemaker, the tears came. What should have been a simple celebration became a powerful moment of reflection. For the first time, the full weight of what had happened—and what could have been had I not listened to my body that morning —truly sank in. In that moment, I realized that the physical healing was the easy part.

Facing your own mortality has a way of changing your perspective on everything.

Just four days later, Mother’s Day brought even more reflection and gratitude for the people I love and the moments that matter most.

This journey has reminded me how fragile life can be, but also how resilient we are.

I am profoundly grateful to the doctors, nurses, and healthcare teams who cared for me, and to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada for funding life-saving research, education, and support for patients and families.

Thank you to everyone who has donated, sent messages, walked with me, and kept me in your thoughts. Your support has carried me through more than you know.

If you are able to support my Heart & Stroke fundraiser, every donation helps provide hope, answers, and second chances to people like me.

And one important reminder: if something in your body doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts and seek medical attention. It could save your life.

My Why

Sunday 26th Apr
This past week has been one of the most unexpected and humbling experiences of my life.

On Monday April 20th I found myself facing a serious heart issue that led to a hospital stay and, ultimately, getting a pacemaker. It’s still surreal to even write that. One minute life felt normal, and the next I was getting a high-tech “upgrade” to keep things ticking along properly.

The good news (and something I’m incredibly grateful for) is that my heart itself is healthy—it just had a bit of an electrical miscommunication. Basically, the hardware is solid
the wiring needed a little tech support. âšĄïžâ€ïž

Heart and stroke issues aren’t new to our family. Dad fought a courageous, stoic battle with heart disease for years until his passing in 2008; and Mom suffered two life-changing strokes and, in true form, showed incredible strength and resilience through it all. I’m so grateful to say she’s still with us at 94. Her incredible strength inspires me every day.

Walking through my own experience now brings a whole new level of perspective, empathy, and gratitude.

Celebrating my birthday on May 6th will feel a little different this year—in the best way. It feels less about candles and more about being here, being healthy, and being surrounded by people I love. Honestly, I’d say getting an upgraded heart rhythm just in time is a pretty solid gift. 🎁

What has stood out most through all of this is how supported and loved I am.

To my friends and family—thank you, truly, from the bottom of my heart. Every message, every check-in, every offer to help meant more than I can possibly put into words. In moments that felt scary and uncertain, you reminded me that I wasn’t facing any of it alone. That kind of support changes everything.

I have to give the BIGGEST, PROUDEST shoutout to my daughter Taryn. She was an absolute champ through all of it. Calm, strong, and right there beside me when I needed her most. Watching her handle such a tough situation with so much courage and love honestly blew me away. I couldn’t be prouder.

One thing this experience has reinforced for me: pay attention to your body. If something doesn’t feel right, don’t brush it off or wait it out—go get it checked.

I’ve signed up for the Walk 1K a Day in May in support of Heart & Stroke as a way to give back and honour my family’s journey, and to turn my own experience into something positive. Also, let’s be honest—if I’ve got a built-in rhythm assistant now, I might as well put it to work. 😉

Here’s to healing, gratitude, strong hearts (even the slightly rewired ones), and putting one foot in front of the other.
