Sunday 12th Apr

In September of 2009 I was working my shift at McDonald's when I started experiencing numbness on half of my face. My speech was garbled, and I was struck with the most intense and awful headache I've ever had.

My dad took me to emerge where I was sent to the Stroke Prevention Clinic. After several tests it was found that I had a very large hole in my heart. Specifically, an Atrial Septal Defect. They deduced that this is how a clot travelled to my brain and caused a TIA. I went on to have 2 separate surgical procedures at Toronto General Hospital. One was to cauterize part of my heart that had grown in size to accommodate for my active lifestyle, and the final one was to have an occluder placed to close the hole.

They also discovered that I had a Chiari Malformation. (Explaining all my headaches and numbness in my hands!) This discovery sent me to a Neurosurgeon at St. Michael's and resulted in several brain surgeries.

This TIA essentially saved my life. I also knew the signs and symptoms of a stroke, and took what happened to me seriously. I knew I needed to get medical attention, and quickly.

I hope that by fundraising for the heart and stroke foundation, that we can educate others and recognize that this is not just for "old" people.

You’re an inspiration Katelyn! My mum had a stroke a few years ago, and thanks to the quick response of people around her who recognized the symptoms she had minimal lasting damage.
