Walking for Heart & Stroke: 90 km for a Cause Close to My Heart

Sunday 30th Aug
This September, I’m taking on a personal challenge: walking 90 km in support of Heart & Stroke.

For me, this is about much more than completing 90 kilometres. Heart disease and stroke have been a significant part of my family’s history, and that history ultimately shaped the career I chose.

I have worked as a Cardiovascular Technologist for 15 years, but my connection to cardiovascular care began much earlier—20 years ago, when my father experienced his first heart attack. That event inspired me to pursue a career in cardiology and become a Cardiovascular Technologist.

My family history is significant. One of my grandfathers suffered a debilitating stroke in his 40s, and two of my grandparents died from fatal myocardial infarctions (heart attacks). My father had experienced two heart attacks, with his first resulting in a quadruple bypass in his 60s.

These experiences have given me a very personal understanding of how profoundly cardiovascular disease can affect individuals and families.

Over the years, my career has allowed me to see the other side of that experience. As a Cardiovascular Technologist, I have the privilege of being involved in a patient's initial cardiac testing and assessment. Whether I'm performing a stress test, stress echocardiogram, or nuclear stress test, I know that for many patients, this may be the beginning of an important journey in understanding their heart health.

Being able to help someone through that initial testing—often when they are anxious or uncertain—is one of the most fulfilling aspects of my work.

That is why this 90 km walk feels particularly meaningful. Every kilometre represents an opportunity to raise awareness, support research, and contribute to the work Heart & Stroke does to prevent heart disease and stroke and improve outcomes for those affected by them.

I’m walking in honour of my family, in recognition of the patients I have had the privilege of caring for, and in the hope that fewer families will have to experience the impact of heart disease and stroke.

90 km is a long way—but it is a small distance compared with the journey many patients and families face after a heart attack or stroke.

This September, I’m proud to walk for a cause that has been a significant part of my life .

Every step counts. Every donation helps. And every effort toward preventing heart disease and stroke matters.

Thank you for supporting me and helping me reach my 90 km goal.
