Why I’m Taking on a Walking Challenge This April
Sunday 8th MarThis April, I’m participating in a walking challenge in support of the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada. It’s a simple commitment—get outside, move more, and raise awareness for heart health—but it’s something that has become increasingly meaningful to me.
As I’ve moved into my 50s, heart health feels a lot less abstract than it once did. Like many people, I’m starting to see more friends, colleagues, and family members facing heart-related health challenges. It’s a reminder that these issues touch many of us, often sooner than we expect.
For me, it’s also personal. My mom suffered a stroke, and watching someone you love go through that experience changes the way you think about health. It brings into focus how important prevention, research, and support really are—not just for individuals, but for families as well.
That’s part of why I decided to take part in this challenge.
Walking may seem like a small thing, but it’s one of the simplest and most accessible ways to support heart health. It doesn’t require special equipment or training—just a bit of time and the intention to move. And sometimes those small, consistent actions are what make the biggest difference over time.
One of the things I’m most looking forward to is doing the challenge alongside my daughter, who is participating as well. It’s a nice way for us to spend time together while doing something positive for our health—and hopefully building a habit that sticks beyond the month of April.
Throughout April, I’ll be getting outside for more walks than usual and supporting the important work of the Heart & Stroke Foundation—helping to advance research, education, and awareness around heart disease and stroke.
