July Swimming Challenge

My target 5 kms

Well, well, well...me in a swim challenge!

This July I'm swimming and fundraising for Heart & Stroke, and I can’t do it alone. Every donation, big or small, brings me one step closer to my fundraising target.

I am motivated in 2 ways. Firstly, I can spend time in the beautiful pool that my husband so lovingly maintains. Secondly, my father in law passed away from a sudden heart attack, and his father passed away from stroke complications. This is a charity close to our family and one I'd like to support.

That's a wrap!

Thank you to everyone who supported me during this challenge!
I raised 132% of my donations goal and swam 230% of my distance goal. This entire experience was a pleasure. I appreciate you being a part of it. xxoo

A little swimming buddy

Wednesday 29th Jul
My granddaughter was visiting yesterday and of course, pool time is always on the agenda! She asked me if I had done my 15 'times back and forth' yet. (she is 5 yrs old) When I said no, she asked if she could swim them with me. We tackled 8 lengths together in 2 x 4 length increments and she cheered me on for the rest!

So long Ruth...

Monday 27th Jul
On June 30th, a day before this challenge began, a female mallard settled into a spot under our deck and made a nest in the mulch. We named her Ruth and she called this space home for the next 20 days.
My daily swims brought me to the pool's edge; a mere 6 ft. from Ruth who rarely left the nest. We had visits every day and she was great company...letting me do most of the talking. Ruth laid and hatched 10 eggs and last Monday, after we painstakingly retrieved the ducklings from the pool, Ruth led her family out of our backyard and on to a new home nearby.
So long Ruth.  I am so proud of you. You did it. Thanks for trusting us and making a home in our yard. I will miss you.

Distance goal met!

Saturday 18th Jul
In the evening hour at dusk, surrounded by the beautiful solitude of the backyard  pool, I quietly swam through the finish line.                          No fanfare; just me in the water, exactly the way I wanted it to be, reaching a personal goal.                                                                                                               I made a cup of tea, wrapped a towel around me, and punched myself in the arm.                                                                                                                                     I am only half way through the month and look forward to adding to my distance - with a loose but hopeful goal to double it.

Back to the lake!

Wednesday 15th Jul
A couple of days ago I was able to swim again in the open waters of Lake Huron; this time off the shore of the Goderich beach. The water was calm and cold - 69 degrees. There were only a handful of people in the water even though the beach was filled with lots of people enjoying the warm weather. I love swimming in the lake and and this way of getting some good distance under my belt.

Holidays!

Friday 10th Jul
It's been easy to swim morning, afternoon and evening this week and to log some extra lengths. This week also saw me swim 15 glorious lengths in a pool heated to 38 C degrees. Sounds warm but I was quickly cooled down by a cold plunge in 7 C degree water. (#nordicspa)

Lake vs. Pool

Monday 6th Jul
Today I was able to swim 4 x my daily goal in the open waters of Lake Huron. The water was choppy at times so the extra resistance was felt.
But this was such a beautiful change and privilege to be in the lake today.

Day 2

Thursday 2nd Jul
I'm not saying the challenge is easier than expected, but today I was able to log extra lengths and hoping to continue in this way. It certainly helps that it is so hot out and the pool temperature is perfect!

Day 1!

Wednesday 1st Jul
I split my daily goal into 2 swims but that allowed a bit more distance to log!
