One Stroke at a Time: My 5 km Heart & Stroke Swim Challenge

Tuesday 14th Jul
When I signed up to swim 5 kilometres for the Heart & Stroke Foundation, I knew it would be a challenge. What I didn’t realize was just how much this journey would teach me about perseverance, patience, and believing in myself.
If you had asked me a few months ago if I could swim 5 kilometres, I probably would have laughed. I started my swimming journey in March, and at first I could barely manage more than a dog paddle. Every length of the pool felt like hard work, but I kept showing up.
Slowly, things began to change. My breathing improved. My confidence grew. Before long, I was swimming 500 metres at a time and discovering that I genuinely loved being in the water.
July brought a new challenge: swimming 5 kilometres to raise money for the Heart & Stroke Foundation. With a busy summer full of horse shows, camping, family activities, and everyday life, fitting in swims wasn’t always easy. Some days I swam in the pool, while other days I took on the waves of the lake, where the wind, murky water, and changing conditions made every metre a little more challenging.
There were days when I didn’t hit the distance I had planned, and there were days when I surprised myself. Every swim, whether it was 250 metres or 500 metres, moved me one step closer to my goal.
This challenge wasn’t about being the fastest swimmer or having perfect technique. It was about proving to myself that progress happens one stroke at a time.
I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who has donated, shared words of encouragement, or followed along on this journey. Your support has kept me motivated every time I stepped into the water.
Heart disease and stroke affect so many families, and knowing that every dollar raised helps fund life-saving research, prevention, and recovery programs makes every metre worth it.
Whether you’re training for your first race, learning a new skill, or chasing a goal that seems impossible, remember this: you don’t have to be great to start. You just have to start.
One stroke at a time. One metre at a time. One goal at a time.
Thank you for cheering me on. The finish line is getting closer, and I can’t wait to complete all 5 kilometres!
