My Why

My why is my Nan, Yvonne Motley. 

I lost my Nan suddenly to a heart attack in July 2020, at the age of 71, and just 12 days before my wedding. Losing her was one of the most devastating experiences of my life. She wasn’t just my Nan — she was my best friend, my confidant, my biggest supporter, and my go-to person for everything. She was the person I could call about absolutely anything, whether I needed advice, encouragement, or just wanted to tell her about my day.

She was one of the strongest, funniest, wittiest and most caring people I’ve ever known — not to mention one of the best cooks. Six years later, there are still so many moments when I wish I could pick up the phone and call her. I miss her voice, her laugh, her hugs. I miss spending time with her. She always made me feel loved and supported.

Growing up, we did the Heart & Stroke walk together every year as a family — my Nan, my mom, my cousins, my aunts and me. Now, every year on her birthday in May, I make a donation to the Heart & Stroke Foundation in her memory. It’s become a small way for me to honour her, and this year I wanted to do something more.

This September, I’m walking 90 km in support of the Heart & Stroke Foundation, and every kilometre will be in her memory. I’m doing this because heart disease changed my family forever, and because I hope the money I raise can help fund research, prevention and care so that other families can have more time with the people they love.
