🌟 I need your support! 🌟

Last September, at the age of 47, a friend of mine suffered multiple strokes over the course of a week. The first few were mild enough that the symptoms flew under the radar, but the last one was not. Thanks to the quick actions and intervention of his son, the First Responders, ER and Neurology teams, he pulled through and today is doing really well!Ā

After countless checkups, tests, medications and exams, the cause was determined to be congenital heart disease. A hole in the wall of the heart, which had been there since birth, was giving blood clots an all access pass to his brain. Next came surgery to repair the defect, followed by ongoing physio and occupational therapy and everything in between. The road to recovery after a stroke is long and nuanced, and far too many don’t get the chance to walk it. He is one of the lucky ones. šŸ’—

This September, I'll be walking 90km for those who aren’t able, to raiseĀ Ā money for the Heart & Stroke Foundation, and I’m asking for your help! Every step I take, and every move you make in support will help fund research, raise awareness and provide better resources to the medical teams taking such great care of our loved ones when tragedy strikes ā¤ļø

Donate what you can, share this link to spread awareness, or both ~ every little bit helps! Together we can make a difference! šŸŒŸšŸ’ŖšŸ»šŸŒŸ

Day 19: I Think I can; I Know I Can

Monday 14th Sep

šŸ‘Ÿ61 kms out of 90.Ā Ā $325 raised out of $1,000. 16 days left out of 30. šŸ‘Ÿ

It’s happening ~ I’m doing the thing ~ I’m making the changes for myself and hopefully helping others as I go. It’s a good thing!Ā

As I reflect on my weekend, I realize how productive it was. I slept in, I relaxed, but I also found myself planning the days around my walking. Asking myself where I could fit in the 3km amongst the other things I wanted to do. Searching my destinations on Google Maps to check the distance, clocking the time to make sure I could do it all…and I did!Ā

On Saturday I walked into town to run my errands, on Sunday I split the distance between two parts and places in my day, and even got an extra 2km in. I felt clearer, unweighted by the guilt that follows the paralyzed overwhelm which usually controls my days off, where there’s so much to do but I don’t knew where to start so end up doom-scrolling for hours instead….

Walking has given me a purpose ~ a reason for getting off the couch, while still feeling relaxed ~ a way to give back to myself, while simultaneously jumpstarting my day. I’m feeling a bit selfish about it too. My friends offer to join me, but I like the time to myself. The time to let my mind wander and uncover my reflection of the moment, the hour, the week. Every walk is different. Sometimes brisk, sometimes slower yet still focused, and sometimes even a little lonely because I do want a friend with me. I walk the same route each day, but the internal destination varies. What I need from it changes. What I get out of it is never the same. What looks on the surface to be a boring daily routine, is actually anything but. Because I don’t know who I’m going to be when I step outside at 5am tomorrow morning, or who I’ll be at 5:45 when I get back home…

What I can say is that what I thought was going to just be a 30-day challenge, is quickly becoming something that I know will continue long past that. My body needs it, my mind needs it, I need it. So I’ll keep walking through September and beyond, and maybe even continue sharing my thoughts and observations…thinking about what I’m going to write has been part of the fun.Ā Ā Letting the thoughts out makes space for new ones, reflections flowing with my steps and breath…

To those of you who have followed alongside me, thank you for supporting my latest impulse and keeping me accountable to myself! Thank you for allowing my words to resonate ~ hearing that I’ve inspired someone makes my heart swell šŸ’—(honestly, you have no idea!) 🄹. Thank you for sharing my posts, for your donations, and for doing what you can to spread awareness. It’s true what they say about the power of a village. To those I pass it might look like I’m walking alone, but there’s a whole gang of incredible friends strolling right alongside me, their footsteps silent but mighty, helping to carry me wherever I need to go. šŸ™šŸ»šŸ„¹ā¤ļø

DAY 15

Friday 11th Sep

Skeletons in the Closet

Friday 11th Sep

A 7:30am meeting pushed my morning walk to this evening. Although I knew I’d still get out today, I was a little sad to not start my day with one. A few weeks ago I thought early risers were crazy ~ now I’m becoming one.Ā Ā Not only do I feel my circadian rhythm shifting, I’m noticing other changes as well. My sense of smell seems more sensitive, my mind is a little sharper, and the noises that I used to drown out are switching places with the only ones I wanted to listen to.Ā

Any of my friends will tell you that I never go anywhere without my music. If I’m driving, the stereo is blasting, if I’m walking, the buds are securely in my ears connected to whatever playlist fits the current mood, and I’m strutting along giving my best Tony Manero impression, while being completely checked out of the world around me. Everything inside flows with the music ~ the tune directs how I’m feeling, the lyrics drive my thoughts. It’s where I go to figure things out. The outside noises are simply too loud without it and overwhelm my senses. Music is the escape and the mode of transportation determines how quickly that escape happens.Ā

That’s changed since I started my walking challenge. I still love my music ~ the world would be such a dull and dreary place without it ~ but now I’m more selective with it. My morning walks started with instrumentals. Anything else was too jarring so early in the day. Instrumental sounds allowed my brain the chance to wake up slowly,Ā Ā guiding it to move with my body rather than jumping straight into thinking & feeling mode. I found it calming and felt less rushed beginning my day. So I started doing the same on my way to work. The chords of a Peaceful Guitar playlist sooth my nervous system as I enter rush hour traffic. Instead of absorbing all the feels of a certain songwriter’s life experience and steeling myself for the daily grind, the 30 minute drive has become a soft, steady time to mindfully prepare for my day rather than an emotionally charged one where I’m mentally exhausted before I even start.Ā

As I stepped out this evening I didn’t want anything playing in my ears. I didn’t want lyrics or chords or anything persuading me how to feel. I didn’t want anything unnecessarily taking up space. I just wanted to be. For as long as I can remember that’s been a pretty uncomfortable place for me. The being. I’ve always looked for the escape into someone else’s world. Today was the first time I truly enjoyed being in mine. Sitting in myself. Letting whatever wanted to surface float until it sank again. Watching the observations come and go with my footsteps, ebb and flow with the sea. Today I felt fully present.Ā

The thoughts were all over the place as I tracked my KMs

250m -Ā ā€œthe rush of wind in my ears is nice. Like it’s wiping my brain-slate cleanā€

600m - ā€œ3 cruise ships in tonight. Water is choppy. Lots of people out. Everyone is grasping to the last dregs of summer before the colder weather comes.ā€

650m -Ā ā€œthat lady is wearing shorts and a puffy winter jacket…only in Victoria and yep, we’re all definitely begging summer to stayā€¦ā€

1km -Ā ā€œ11 min 34 seconds. Beating my morning average by 1 min. NICE! šŸ‘šŸ»Ā

Shit, my shoelace is untiedā€¦ā€

1.5km -Ā ā€œthis is a new route, did I judge the distance right? Am I gonna be over or under 3km??ā€

2km -Ā ā€œNope, I’m good ~ it’ll be over 3…maybe 4! Ooo split pace is down to 11 min Nice work!ā€ šŸ†Ā

2.2km -Ā ā€œBut if I walk too fast I won’t close my fitness ring. I hate when I don’t close all my ringsā€¦ā€

2.5km -Ā ā€œClosing the rings isn’t what’s important. There’s a much bigger picture to what you’re doing here than an Apple fitness goal. Stop being so competitive and appreciate what you’re doing for yourself!ā€¦šŸ’—ā€

2.53km -Ā ā€œā€¦Oh don’t forget to stop at the store for yogurt on the way backā€

2.54km -Ā ā€œI remembered to buy yogurt without setting an alert - YAY!! šŸŽ‰ My brain feels so much sharper the last few weeks…is the walking doing that? It must be…DOUBLE YAY!!šŸŽ‰Ā ā€œ

2.7km -Ā ā€œThat girl is out walking for herself too. Go my sista! (Makes direct eye contact and smiles -Ā Ā she smiles back 😊)ā€

3km - ā€œHit my daily challenge goal and still going! Can’t wait to write about it! āœļø šŸ“” ā€œ

3.6km -Ā ā€œNearly home…so hungry. Need dinner…That skeleton isn’t wearing any costumes today. Wonder what the next one will be? Whoever owns this place are hilarious!šŸ’€šŸ˜† ā€œ

And the list goes on…

The thoughts were everywhere, but they were clear, unjumbled, free. Not scary, nothing that needed to be escaped. Allowed to be whatever they needed to be. They were me….and as it turns out, I’m not so bad! šŸ˜…

DAY 13

Tuesday 8th Sep

Embracing The Nothing

Tuesday 8th Sep
Ā Ā DID YOU KNOW: Nine in ten Canadians have at least one risk factor for heart disease and stroke. Almost 80% of premature Ā heart disease and stroke can be prevented through healthy behaviours.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Motivation was holding on for dear life last week. Accountability was the only thing pushing my feet past the physical, mental and emotional fatigue. Who knew that wanting to walk for just 30 minutes each day could be such a struggle?Ā
To be fair, I was also going to pilates, taking beginner rowing classes, and thinking about my dad. Sept 2nd marked a full year since he’s been gone and grief does interesting things to one’s body. Not to mention fiscal year-end pressures at work, the challenge of maintaining patient & positive vibes for the team, all while trying stay on top keeping myself fed and watered and my apartment free from disarray. Considering the internal chaos I was facing, I’m pretty darn proud of the fact that I continued Ā rolling my tired butt out of bed at 5am each day and didn’t allow myself to lose momentum over the long weekend.Ā
Last week I was questioning my choices. This morning I felt a click. Almost imperceptible, but it was there. I wanted to get up with my alarm. I felt a faint thrill of excitement to show up for myself; to meet the day 1:1. I needed it.Ā
There’s something very calming about walking down the middle of a deserted road or pathway. Surrounded by quiet. Surrounded by stillness. Surrounded by nothing. It hits different to capture that sense of serenity in the city. You expect it hiking through the woods or strolling around the lake, but when you find it taking up the space reserved for traffic, noise and daily hustle and bustle, that’s a whole other experience entirely. Ā Your shoulders relax, your breath deepens and your thoughts slow down, allowing the nothing to take over your mind and body. No sounds of traffic, rushing or agendas. Just your footsteps, your imagination and you.Ā
I’m feel myself starting to crave it now. The pocket of time I have before the city rolls itself out of bed. Until now I thought people were crazy to wake up so early when they could stay cozied up in bed. But I think I’m being converted ~ pulled to the side where the early morning darkness, the nothing, Ā gently reveals the freedom and the light. Where I can shut my brain off enough for it to do the real work. Where I can simply enjoy being.Ā
The thoughts that come up are interesting. Although I’m walking the same path each day, every morning reveals something completely different, keeping me coming back for more. Sharing these musings is fun too ~ however crazy they might sound. Strangely, putting myself on paper is something I look forward to as I step into the day. I’ve always loved writing but have never been consistent with it ~ how odd that a walking challenge is the thing that’s refuelled the urge.Ā
But that’s the funny thing about life. The universe takes the wheel when you’re busy making other plans, so you may as well roll with it. (Or walk with it as the case may be). I’m 43 km down a 90 km road ~ can’t wait to see what the remaining 47 will reveal…
Ā
DAY 10 (cuz I cheated and started a few days early)
Sunday 6th Sep
Lessons of a Skin Horse
Sunday 6th Sep
I’ve always loved James Bay. It’s one of those Ā areas that’s somehow avoided being drowned in modern design and architecture. Or at least, mostly avoided.Ā
It’s a spot that’s clung to the vintage charm Victoria is known for; the community delicately honouring its history by taking what’s worn and loving it to life with poetic artistry and whimsy. Heritage Homes so beautifully maintained they belong in a story book. Aged wooden fences casually resting on wildly pruned rose bushes; the canes and shoots twisting between the boards, holding them together with perfect, vibrant blooms. Private oases tucked peacefully away among overflowing gardens. Boats repurposed into planters. Tea-cup trees, driftwood benches, garage door murals and secret fairy gardens hidden in plain sight, for only those looking closely enough to find. Ā
We don’t shy away from the old. We don’t try to change it or make it better. We do our best to resist the flashy new builds and fancy infills, opting to enhance the beauty that’s already here, laying beneath the sprawling ivy, chipped paint and root-split sidewalks. We let the light that’s danced a hundred lifetimes shine through, breathing our own energy into the mix, adding to the warmth and the real. And we love it for exactly what it is.Ā
Shabby chic. Perfectly Imperfect. Simply Complex. Beautifully Broken. Areas like James Bay are scattered all over the city, sharing their wisdom with those are ready to hear it. it’s not just a place to live, It’s way of life ~ A reminder to come back to ourselves. šŸŒŸā¤ļøšŸŒŸ
DAY # Lost track
Friday 4th Sep
Picking up to slow down
Friday 4th Sep
My mind is racing this morning. How can your thoughts move so quickly when you’re so tired??
I started this walking journey with great expectations of eloquently blogging every day about how much I’m learning from the experience. Sharing my wisdom with the masses. Connecting with my inner Carrie Bradshaw, posting daily snippets of my Views & Wisdom from James Bay.Ā
Instead I’m literally rolling out of bed, throwing on wrinkled, completely uncoordinated comfies from the floor pile they were thrown on the night before, and walking out the door with my eyes half shut into the pre-sunrise darkness. My body is scrambling to keep up with this 30-day challenge I committed it to, and my mind is hot on its heels.Ā
It’s just walking, what’s the big deal? 40 minutes each morning. An easy way to get the body moving. Quiet time to recenter and reconnect with myself. An unassuming way to help me lose weight. A way to do something to help a community that needs support. A catalyst to share my thoughts because maybe someone will read them and feel heard. A number on a goal tracker for my competitive (anxious) nature to meet. A dollar value to raise. and, And, AND….
True to form, I’ve allowed a simple, healthy goal turn into something much bigger than it needs to be. Added pressure to the thing that’s meant to relieve it. Turned something light and fun into a thing to conquer…No wonder my brain keeps churning!Ā
Like sands through the hourglass, these are the thoughts of my day…
Usually I’d be annoyed with myself, for not ā€œgetting it rightā€ and being all zen from the get go.Ā Ā But I’m human, I have emotions and basement stuff that impact me. Rather than beating myself up about it, I honour it. I appreciate the reflections each step churns up. This is all part of the journey ~ and adventures are supposed to get a little messy at times. That’s what makes them exciting!Ā
So instead of getting down on myself, I’m choosing to be grateful for the strength it takes to commit to myself each day, and for the courage it takes to face whatever comes up.Ā
I wonder where tomorrow’s steps will lead me? Perhaps my therapist’s office would be a good destination šŸ˜‚šŸ‘ŸšŸ’—
DAY 3: 10km down!
Sunday 30th Aug
Letting the Laugh
Sunday 30th Aug
There’s a lightness in the air today. Inhibitions floating carefree on the breeze. Sunday softness.Ā
People are far more connected than we think.Ā
Balls of energy floating around in life lucky enough to bump into each other and trade offerings. It’s up to us what we do with that energy. That connection. We have the choice to make it whatever we want.Ā
Can we change others?Ā
No.Ā
But we do get to decide how we connect. How we respond. How we feel after. We get to decide whether we feel angry or sad or how much enjoyment we get out of it. How much fun we have.Ā
As I started my walk I heard laughter and happy yelling in the distance. As I heated the water I found a group of people taking a polar bear swim in the ocean (Is it called a polar bear swim in August??). They were splashing and diving, doing underwater handstands and calling out to each other in encouragement and support. It was 15 degrees out so the water must have been freezing, but they didn’t care.Ā
This group had made a commitment to each other. To themselves. To do something crazy. To have fun. To laugh and yell. To let their hearts be light and enjoy the moment. To live their best lives, together. May we all walk through each day with such courage and strength. May we all choose to meet each other in openness and vulnerability. What a beautiful thing it is to be so authentically ourselves. What an incredible thing it is to be free.Ā
DAY 2
Saturday 29th Aug
Morning Rituals and Falling Free
Saturday 29th Aug
I woke up with the world again. Not as early as yesterday, but it’s a Saturday so we’re all giving ourselves permission to move a little slower today.
A handful of people are out enjoying their morning ritual ~ jogging, walking the dog, decompressing on the balcony, soaking in the quiet solitude of their pristine ocean view. I like the idea of a morning ritual. Up until now mine has been sitting in the couch (In? On? No, ā€˜in’ is probably more accurate!) catching up on social media ā€œnewsā€ before getting ready for work. It’s quiet and allows me to shut out the noise. Or at least that’s what I thought. But after just two days of walking through the city’s silence, I realize that I’ve been turning down the wrong sounds. All this time I’ve been muting myself.Ā
Walking stirs the soul. Like throwing the windows open after a long winter, letting the outside freshness break up the stagnant air inside. That’s where I’m hearing myself. My voice, my thoughts, my emotions ~Ā Ā stirring up with the breeze. There’s some dust and a little dirt of course, but nothing too hard to clean. Just roll my sleeves up, get to work and face the day fresh, leaving ample space for the good to flow in. Walking and thinking. Walking and feeling. Walking and coffee. Walking and waking up. Walking and slowing down.Ā
Summer is slowing down too. Inviting Fall for a morning visit before it decides to properly settle in. This time of year has always made me a little melancholy, watching the colourful gardens wilt and dull, and the day turn to night far too soon for my liking. Today I felt the importance of the new season. There is beauty in the transformation. Nature isn’t dying ~ it’s shedding. Letting go of yesterday and making room for tomorrow. Beneath the surface the real work is happening.Ā Ā Roots growing deeper and stronger, exploring new pathways to nourish fresh creations. Spring’s gardens will look different. Sure, there will be similarities, but they will smell and feel altered. A shift at their core. There will be no going back but why would you want to?Ā
Instead of summer sadness, I’m seeing that fall brings anticipation. Encouragement to imagine tomorrow and time to build dreams into reality. Fall is a crack of the garden gate ~ a peek into the future, stirring the thrill of excitement for what’s to come.
So I’ll keep walking. Showing up for myself. Shifting with the seasons. Sweeping up my fallen leaves. Soaking in the lessons of each step. Trusting and having faith in myself and the future. Because somehow, even when you walk in circles, you always end up exactly where you need to be šŸ’«šŸ’—šŸ’«Ā
Day 1 - What the hell am I doing??
Friday 28th Aug
I never do things like this; fundraisers, blogs, getting involved in community. I pretty much keep to myself and my inner circle. So I’m not sure why I decided to start now.Ā Ā I feel like I’m being a bit of a scammer, asking to raise money for a cause when walking 90km is really for my own health as much as anything else. Mental and physical. So I thought I may as well invite you to come along and hear some of the thoughts that roll through my head in the wee hours of the morning…
3 years ago, I was really struggling. I was exhausted, stressed, emotional, couldn’t concentrate and legitimately felt like a crazy person. My periods were getting longer, heavier and more painful. I was told this was a normal part of women’s aging.Ā Ā Between work and personal pressures, and my body having a mind of its own, I worked myself into a state of burnout and had to take 6 months off. I decided to use that time look inwards and make some serous changes. I learned that the uterine fibroids that I’d known about for years but was told weren’t a concern, were causing me to become anemic. The other symptoms that went along with that were becoming more severe and unmanageable. PMS symptoms: mood swings, bloating and gas pains after every meal, cramps so painful they woke me up at 2am in tears; bleeding for 2 weeks out of the month, once so heavily I ended up in the ER when my blood pressure tanked and I was too dizzy to drive myself there. My body no longer belonged to me.Ā
Knowing I’d have at least 10 more years of increasing struggle until I hit menopause, I decided surgery was the best option for improving my quality of life. After a total hysterectomy at 44 my body has spent the last 18 months going through its own battles, recovering, adapting, getting older and learning what it needs now. Mentally and emotionally it’s been a wild ride. Regaining clarity, learning what normal tired feels like, and feeling like I’ve finally getting it all together and I can get back to being me. And I did for a minute…but of course, life had other plans.
2 months after the surgery I learned my dad had cancer. 3 months later, on Sept 2nd, he passed away, 2 weeks shy of anniversary of my mum’s death. She’d passed 10 years earlier on what would’ve been their wedding anniversary. On Sept 20th, my friend suffered his stroke. On top of all this, there were major upheavals happening at work. Just as my body was healing from surgery, grief and stress started to take their toll.
Mentally I felt clear, or at least clearer than I ever had. I’d done the therapy, regulated my meds and understood and accepted my emotional state for what it was. Everything I was feeling and thinking was explainable. Physically, I didn’t know what the heck was going on. I’d gained weight since the surgery, but figured that was normal and I’d lose it just as easily as I had every other time I’d gained a few pounds. But my body isn’t the same as before. It’s minus one organ - one that’s pretty damn important for the hormonal functioning of a woman’s body. Completely normal physiological changes that directly impact body composition and function had already begun, and removing the major contributor to my healthy hormone levels kicked that into high-gear. Although the bloodwork and medical exams haven’t definitively proven anything yet, I know that I’ve officially entered perimenopause territory.Ā
And once again my body doesn’t feel like mine. Logically, I know what’s happening and try to give myself grace. Emotionally is another story. It’s a crazy dynamic, body vs mind.Ā Ā Mentally feeling like I’m Ā 20 only to be shocked by what I see in the mirror and photos. Knowing I’m a capable, intelligent and knowledgeable human positively contributing to the world, only to completely blank on simple words and seemingly forget how to talk or even think in the middle of a work meeting.Ā Ā Becoming a total clutz, dropping the same item multiple times and bending over just as many times to pick it up and still missing. Inexplicably gaining weight over night - like enough that my pants suddenly don’t fit, but being unable to lose it. Slowly losing the will to care what anyone thinks, but still caring very much. Or at least, caring what I think. Knowing I’m totally ok, but feeling like a messy puddle of goo all at the same time.Ā
I’m not sure what walking every day is going to do to help all this, but something told me to try. Not try - DO. So here I am. Slogging out of bed at 5:15am. Watching the world wake up with the sun. Saying goodnight to the moon. Saying hello to my day and manifesting a healthier, more in control me. The city is so peaceful at this time of day. The kind of quiet where you can smell and taste the earth better. The ocean, the grass, the pavement, the wind. The air hits your skin differently - flowing through your veins. Your feet rollĀ Ā forward on the breeze Ā so naturally you forget that a few minutes ago they didn’t want to move. I forgot how much I appreciate this feeling.Ā
Since mum died, September has been a tough month for me. Then dad died and my friend got sick. Over the past week I’ve been dreading it getting nearer, feeling the emotions welling up. But then I saw this opportunity to do something different. To turn the month into something good rather than something sad. To move through my feelings while continuing to heal my body. To love and help myself while doing something to love and help others.
So here’s to doing what I’ve gotta do. Here’s to taking control of myself. Here’s to giving back. Here’s to me and here’s to you! I’m nervous and excited - not quite sure what this experience will bring. And I’m happy to invite you along and share whatever comes up to whomever feels inclined to read.
Maybe September isn’t going be so bad after all….
Happy Friday!
